Esteban Ocon partner for 2023 has yet to be decided. And so, as of today, Tuesday 20 September, the Alps have chartered the Hungaroring track for three days, starting with “casting” for a spot on the Enstone. Five drivers competing, three of them involved in Budapest tests: today Antonio Giovinazzi runs, Wednesday 21 it will be Nick de Vries’ turn and Thursday it will be Jack Doohan’s time. All at the wheel of an A521 that raced in the 2021 Championship, chasing that spot vacated by the escape of Fernando Alonso under the supervision of Aston Martin. In addition to the car that “closed” Oscar Piastre to Formula 1, he eventually ran away from the Anglo-French team to choose (not without a few problems) the starting wheel at McLaren next year.

giovinazzi, great opportunity

Giovinazzi has only one goal in mind: to return to his beloved F1, which he had to give up at the end of 2021. It was then downloaded from Alfa Romeo, which picked the Chinese from F2, Guanyu Zhou for this year 2022. Today is an important test for Apulian, But there are also two other options on his table: Williams in place of rookie Nicholas Latifi, or Haas if Mick Schumacher does not renew his contract. Michael’s son is one of the names Alpine has thought of: he’s a favorite of Ocon, who backed him in a recent interview and is part, like Giovinazzi, of Ferrari’s academy, which he can, however, leave naturally at the end of the season when the contract expires. However, Shumeno will not be riding in Hungary, being under contract as an official driver from Haas.

real luck

After Giovinazzi comes De Vries’ turn on Wednesday 21. The Dutchman, Formula 2 champion in 2019 and Formula E champion in the 2020-21 season and always under the protection of Mercedes and Toto Wolff, impressed at Monza at Williams to replace poor Alexander Albon who has appendicitis. He immediately beat Latifi in qualifying, after just one free practice session with Grove, and then went on to score points on his F1 debut with a ninth place finish. A performance that did not leave Helmut Marko indifferent, so much so that he met him in Graz, Austria, to talk about a possible place in the AlphaTauri, should Pierre Gasly breach a contract that was renewed last June for 2023. For Faenza, Colton’s option in the meantime Herta, an American driver who participated in Indycar with the Andretti team, who will not be awarded an F1 Super license.

Dohan in the camera lens

Meanwhile, Alpine is keeping an eye on its youth show talent, Jack Doohan, and wants to avoid another ending like the one with Biastr. The son of five-time MotoGP World Champion Mick Doohan, the 2003 Australian class is currently fourth in the F2 World Championship with British team UNI-Virtuosi. It’s in its first full year in this category, making its debut in 2021 at the last two events in Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. All this after he finished second in Formula 3 in the same season behind Norway’s Dennis Hoeger of Red Bull Racing. The same academy that Doohan grew up in between 2017 and 2021, before being selected for Alpine this year.
