In Udine he can reach 100 goals and pursue his usual goal: to win the championship. Targeted workouts to get in shape at the bottom: Dropping it a year ago cost Inzaghi dearly
That’s it for 100 kids. After that there is nothing, or perhaps the unknown, impossible. The maximum is a hundred, one cannot count more. It’s best for kids too, because since maturity you can’t climb a step higher than that. One hundred is a happy number, in mathematics, even if not in the sense one might imagine. But happily yes Dzeko would be – not even a bit – if he could hit that number (100 goals, in fact) tomorrow already. Eden is one step away from the Serie A hat-trick: if he scores in Udine, at the age of 36 years and 185 days, he will be the third-oldest player ever to cross the finish line, after Pandev (whom we interviewed on the same page.) and Pellissier.
Which is somewhat similar to saying: old for whom? For those who don’t know how much weight they still have inside Inter. Because not only can Lukaku live, not only Lu-La can instigate cause. In Plzen, Dzeko dominated the scene, which is not surprising. Udine, tomorrow, is the most awaited effort. Inzaghi is looking for a partner for Lautaro who has rested in the Czech Republic, and Dzeko should be considered ahead of Correa in the replay, even if the match is not over. It’s a tactical option, not a physical one: Inzaghi has to figure out if he prefers a counter-attacker or a player like the Bosnian who is able to “arm” the flanks, the area where he wins the crucial duels for the three points. There is a day to choose. Meanwhile, Dzeko has already won his game. In the summer, his name was associated with the premise of the sale, when Inter was still chasing the illusion of Dybala. The Bosnian never thought about the possibility of moving. And yes, Juventus – a hypothesis denied by all the champions at the time – an indirect message reached the Bosnian. There is plenty of time to look for other adventures, perhaps even geographically distant courses. There are a thousand reasons why he should not stay away from Milan. But two are more important than the others. The first, of a family character: in the coming months his wife Amra will give birth to another child, the fourth. The second, “Work”: Dzeko has the Scudetto in mind. He doesn’t want to end his career without winning a championship in Italy. He succeeded first in Germany and then in England, the first tournaments to which he devoted his football life. In Italy, seven seasons were not enough to reach the same goal. To reach 99 goals, that is. But Eden wants to go further. He doesn’t want to be like a kid, in fact: stopping at 100 doesn’t interest him, he wants that championship that he – like all his teammates – thought would come in handy last season.
His decline, in the second part of the 2021-22 championship, was decisive on the downside: just four goals from February onwards, with Inter Milan seen running away. He paid for the physical effort he put in in the first few months, as well as having no real alternative to take over. Now Inzaghi has a more complete department and Dzeko will be a factor in return. Troop management is essential, and the rest is done by the Bosnian himself. At Appiano, his off-court work is insane: Eden’s interest in pre- and post-training sessions is the secret to a healthy and still decisive player who will want to be so in March when his ID card says he is 37.
And it wouldn’t be impossible, even when Lukaku returns, to see Lou La and Dzeko on the field at the same time. Never from the beginning of course. But as the game progresses, yes, maybe on occasions where it will be the result of being unblocked or repackaged. Also because the Bosnian has technical characteristics that others don’t have in pink. Inter who chose to change course this year, with Lukaku, is the same that last season with Dzeko on the pitch saw the best attack in the tournament. Relying on Eden is not a leap in the dark. Having it as an option is a luxury for my inzag. The 100 quota here is not synonymous with retirement.
